SITE VISIT – I can schedule a visit with you to discuss your forest management goals and suggest options to accomplish your goals. With your choice the visit could take place in your home, my office or a walk through your woods with you. At this time I can answer any questions that you may have and give you my advice in accomplishing your forest management goals. There will be no charge for this visit.
FOREST MANAGEMENT PLAN – A written plan is an important part of forest management. The plan is based on your forest management goals. Before any management activities are started a plan can help you to determine future management activities in accomplishing your goals. In creating a plan the property is first divided into management units based on timber type and age class and then an inventory of the plants, trees, water resources, roads, trails and soils are taken in each management unit. This information is used to give management recommendations for ten years for each management unit based on the inventory and your goals.
TIMBER SALE – A timber sale has many important parts. If a forest management plan has been prepared it will determine when to harvest, the amount of acres and type of harvest. The timber sale boundary and trees to be cut will be marked with paint. A prospectus (timber sale advertisement) will be prepared and mailed to prospective buyers. A bid will be required from buyers and with approval the highest bid will be selected. A timber sale contract will be made and signed by the buyer and seller. An erosion and sedimentation plan will be done and logging operations and clean up will be supervised to ensure contract compliance.
WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS – I can provide forest management recommendations based upon your goals and forest conditions for wildlife habitat projects.
PROPERTY BOUNDARY LINE MAINTENANCE – A well marked property boundary line can avoid potential problems such as timber trespass. Provided that the boundary line has been surveyed and blazed or painted in the past I can repaint the boundary line and make sure property corners are properly marked. Boundary lines should be painted every 5 – 10 years.
FOREST REGENERATION – Forest regeneration is a very important part of forest management. Natural forest regeneration is the best and most economical for new trees to be established in the forest. This type of regeneration is from the natural production of seed from the trees in the forest. Many environmental conditions are required for the seeds to be produced, germinate and continue to grow to replace trees that will eventually be harvested or killed by insects, disease and wind damage. Afforestation is the planting of tree seedlings or seeds to establish the new trees. I can advise you concerning the best solution for forest regeneration.
TREE FARM INSPECTION – I am a certified Pennsylvania Tree Farm Inspector. If the property is currently a Tree Farm or if you would like to enroll your property as a Tree Farm I can help you to continue to be certified or to become certified.
LOGGING OPERATIONS SUPERVISION – If you are considering to harvest some trees on the property with a certain sawmill company or logger we can provide supervision of the timber sale by on site inspections. I can ensure timber sale contract compliance and provide you with updates concerning the progress of the timber sale.
TIMBER SALE CONTRACT – A timber sale contract is important to ensure that your goals are met when you are harvesting trees on the property. I can design a suitable timber sale contract between you and the buyer of the timber. The contract will be signed by you and the buyer and become a legal document.
CERTIFIED TECHNICAL SERVICE PROVIDER – As a Technical Service Provider for The U. S. Department of Agriculture – Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), I can write a CAP 106 Forest Management Plan based upon your forest management goals and recommend certain forest management practices to accomplish your goals. The NRCS will evaluate your application for a CAP 106 Forest Management Plan and forest management practices to determine if you are eligible for cost share money to help pay for the plan and practices.
TIMBER SALE HAUL ROAD AND SKID ROAD DESIGN AND MARKING – If you are considering a timber sale I can layout the location of a timber haul road and skid trails that are needed to successfully accomplish your timber sale. We can complete an erosion and sedimentation plan for the timber sale.
TIMBER VOLUME AND VALUE ESTIMATE – If trees have been cut and/or removed from the property by accident or intentional and you want to recover the loss, I can help you by calculating an estimate of the volume and value of the timber removed.
